With the 2011 BPM show in Birmingham just on the horizon (1st – 3rd October), Pioneer have just released a teaser video of their latest USB powered DJ Controller (as yet without a name or RRP), with an official announcement promised for Thursday 29th September.
There has been a lot of speculation in the industry that Pioneer had a new controller in development but until now no-one had managed to get further details. The release of this video confirms the rumours and offers some insight into the features of their latest offering which they claim is aimed at making DJing 'fun and intuitive for the New DJ'.
In what Pioneer claim to be a ‘break from static traditional design elements’ (the styling is worlds apart from the rest of their current product range, perhaps a major change in direction for Pioneer ? ) the controller definitely has a more stylish design finish to it than that of many traditional controller units on the market, with a stylish sculpted white bezelled base giving it a distinctive look.
Whilst primarily presenting itself as a 2 channel DJ controller aimed at new DJ’s with ease of use and out of the box functionability, the controller is actually 4 channel switchable (allowing you control of up to 4 Audio decks at a time at the switch of a button, which will appeal to the more advanced DJ). The unit also features a sampler (with what appears to be a pre loaded sample bank) and cue buttons suggesting a greater level of control and creative options than previous DDJ controllers.
Ships with what software ?
This controller will be shipped with fully functional software in the box for a plug in and play experience BUT what software ? The sampler, cue and FX section layout would seem to suggest that Traktor will be thesoftware partner for this controller but witheveryone at Pioneer HQ remaining tight lipped this is pure speculation. There is every possibility that Traktor, Itch, Virtual DJ or even Mixvibes (who created Rekordbox for Pioneer) could be supplying the software for this unit.
Have we seen the light ?
Videos appear to show a number of innovative LED functions which pioneer describe as “visual representations of audio fx/beatsync status”. In short, LEDs situated around the deck platters appear to flash in time to represent the frequency pulse of the selected FX (beat repeat, filter’s, delay’s and gate FX mode’s appear to be present) and both deck platters flash in sync to indicate when tracks are locked in beatsync.
All major controls and effects are intuitively positioned and ready on the first press of a button. Quick access features include four-deck control, filters, FX, Hot Cues and sample banks with loop sampling too. Features you may not expect at this price point, such as high quality audio circuitry from the Pioneer professional mixer range and dual positioning options, mean the DDJ-ERGO-V will have wide appeal.
The DDJ-ERGO-V comes bundled with Atomix Productions Virtual DJ Limited Edition, which is ready to use straight from the box. Packed with features that even top of the range software can't boast, Virtual DJ LE lets DJs scratch, mix and add modern remix effects to your music and video sets without paying for an upgrade. On top of the four decks with autosync, you get instant access to eight samples, smart loops and much more. Automatic beatgrids, high-detail waveforms and a software interface that matches the controller will make it easy to keep track of the mix.
A new approach to the DDJ-ERGO-V adds a visual dimension to DJing. Pulse Control uses lights to highlight what features are in play, how accurate your beat matching is and which track is loaded.
looks like a decent controller, very basic but like a lot of controllers, it does what you need...
not too sure on the design, but i am stuck in my ways with the likes of pioneer 1000's, it does look a bit like pioneer have designed it to look stylish along side a macbook :)
also it seems pioneer are using a skinned Virtualdj, nothing wrong with that but i don't rate VDJ's EQ's, it doesn't even come close to Traktor or Serato's EQ's, i do use VDJ but when i do i use my studio mixer for the EQ's because they are just not good inuf for house usage never mind live usage.
but hay, pioneer are keeping up with the times and over all seems like a nice controller
i will be at BPM this year and hopefully will get to have a little play around and see it for real :)
It'll be interesting to see how it's mapped for TP2 and how it responds - it has a very 'plastic fantastic' cheap look about it - Reckon it looks like it should comin around the £350 mark
